Was Toilet Paper always on a Roll?

2023-06-08

Toilet Paper has been in use for over a century, but the way it was used and dispensed has evolved greatly over time. The first recorded use of toilet paper dates back over a thousand years in China, where it was used by royalty as early as the 6th century. However, the modern form of toilet paper we know today, to be on a roll wasn't introduced until the late 19th century.

Paper

Before the invention of the roll, Four Ply Toilet Paper was sold in individual sheets, folded and stacked in boxes. This posed several issues for users, one of which was to remove the sheets one-by-one which could be inconvenient and also made it difficult to measure how much was needed. Also, the stacked sheets often fused together which resulted in an inadequate supply, thereby forcing users to use other means, more frequently.

Throughout the early 1800s and 1900s, inventors developed various designs to improve the efficiency of toilet paper usage. Some of these designs included perforated rolls, which allowed the paper to be easily torn and measured for use. However, early roll designs were still not widely available in many countries and it took considerable time for the roll design to be embraced. Particularly after the trench warfare during World War I, in which roll-style toilet paper became a more novel way to maintain hygiene and comfort compared to previous paper products. Then, the introduction of indoor plumbing, the growth of large retail chains, and the rise of an advanced transportation network to enable larger-scale distribution helped to increase the popularity and wide availability of paper on a roll.

Scott Paper Company revolutionized the toilet paper industry in 1879 by creating the first sturdy perforated roll of toilet paper. The Compact Toilet Paper gained rapid popularity, and other manufacturers followed suit soon after. A few decades later, in the 1930s, colored toilet paper hit the market as a new trend, including pink, green, and blue, and it became a popular item in America.

Toilet Paper

In conclusion, the modern roll of toilet paper is a relatively recent invention that was first adopted in the late 19th century, with improved designs over time. Before the roll, toilet paper was sold in individual sheets or leaves and has been used by society for centuries to maintain hygiene and comfort. Over time, improvements in technology, transportation, distribution, and innovations in designs emerged, and led to an increase in usage. Today, paper on a roll is the most widely used toilet paper product.Jumbo Toilet Rolls Wholesale, please contact us.
